U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Yuma Sector arrested two illegal aliens Monday, both of whom had lengthy criminal records.

According to Agent Michael Lowrie, a spokesman for the Yuma Sector, the first apprehension was at about 12:20 a.m., when Border Patrol agents patrolling near the Colorado River in Yuma apprehended an illegal alien with the help of the Yuma Station Boat Unit.

"It's a known area for illegal crossing," Lowrie said. "Sometimes they will get into the water and skirt along the edge of the river in the brush until they find a good place to cross, either into California or Arizona."

The subject had entered the United States illegally by crossing the Colorado River. A record check revealed that he has a extensive criminal history dating as far back as 1979, with charges ranging from assault with a deadly weapon to attempted murder.

"He is 79 years old and has been deported from the U.S. nine times," Lowrie. "He is definitely going to see quite a long time in jail this time."

The subject will be processed for removal from the United States and faces criminal charges for illegal re-entry after removal.

Lowrie said the second apprehension was later the same morning at about 12:40 a.m. Border Patrol agents were patrolling in the same area of the Colorado River when they encountered two more illegal aliens in the water.

The Yuma Station Boat Unit was again dispatched and helped catch the two subjects. Records showed that one of them is a known Sureno gang member with a criminal history dating back to 1996.

The gang member’s arrests range from vehicle theft to the possession of a controlled substance, focused mainly in Northern California.

He will be processed for removal and charged with illegal entry, according to the Border Patrol. The other individual had no criminal history and was also processed for removal.
