Border Patrol agents working at a remote camp site on the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge found more than 1,600 pounds of marijuana Tuesday night in an abandoned truck.
At around 11 p.m., Border Patrol Search, Trauma, and Rescue (BORSTAR) agents spotted tire tracks near the boundary of Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument and Cabeza Prieta, said Jesús Rodriguez, Border Patrol Tucson Sector spokesman.
They contacted agents working at Camp Grip — located 60 miles southwest of Ajo where agents spend about seven days at a time — who followed the tracks and found 354 bundles of marijuana inside an abandoned 2005 Ford 250 pickup truck reported stolen out of California. No arrests were made, Rodriguez said.
The 1,627 pounds of marijuana has an estimated value of $1.627 million, according to figures from the National Drug Intelligence Center.
