Border Patrol has a busy week in GV

The Border Patrol was involved in several incidents in Green Valley over the past week.

•About 8 p.m. Monday, a Pima County Sheriff’s Deputy driving in the 2000 block of South Camino Del Sol saw a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of Desert Hills Lutheran Church. When the deputy attempted to stop the vehicle as it was leaving, several suspected illegal immigrants jumped out and ran, according to a report.

A deputy detained three people, who he turned over to the Border Patrol. At least four others escaped, including the driver.

•About 10 a.m. Wednesday, a deputy was driving north on Abrego Drive near Duval Mine Road when he noticed a pickup with a flat tire. When he made a U-turn and approached the pickup, at least eight suspected illegal immigrants jumped out of the bed of the truck and ran east into the desert, according to a report.

One man was stuck in the cab of the pickup and was apprehended; another was caught by a Sahuarita Police officer.

•Later that day, Sheriff’s deputies in Arivaca were led on a pursuit by a suspected drug smuggler who refused to yield. The incident began around 8:30 p.m. near milepost 17 of Arivaca road. According to reports, the pursuit began when the driver of a pickup truck began to speed from a patrol car approaching from behind, and would not stop when the deputy activated his lights.

The truck sped north at 90 mph in a 45 mph zone, sometimes swerving into oncoming traffic, and drove about fives miles before the driver and passenger bailed, according to the report.

Deputies located the two men with the help of a Border Patrol helicopter. One man ran toward a deputy in a threatening manner and was tasered, according to the reports.

No drugs were found in the pickup, but its dashboard lights were blacked out with duct tape and its brake lights were deactivated, which authorities say is indicative of a smuggling vehicle.

•On Friday at about 8:15 a.m., Border Patrol agents were involved in the pursuit of a Dodge Neon that they eventually found parked in the pecan groves near Continental Road and Whitehouse Canyon Road, a spokesman said. Agents apprehended a group of illegal immigrants in the groves about an hour after the incident, and believe they may have bailed from the vehicle, officials said.

•On Tuesday, a suspected smuggling vehicle crashed into a garage near Abrego Drive north of Esperanza Boulevard as it was fleeing the Border Patrol. Golfers said they saw at least two men run from the vehicle. A Border Patrol helicopter searched the area, but the suspects were not found.
