AZ-Border Patrol rescues 30 migrants in deserts

Border Patrol rescues 30 migrants in deserts

    Tuesday, July 21, 2009

TUCSON (AP) -- The Border Patrol says agents rescued 30 illegal immigrants from Mexico in southern Arizona deserts over the weekend, including one group of 20.

Agents from the Tucson Sector's Ajo station found seven people on the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, including one severely dehydrated man who collapsed and died on the scene. Others in the group told agents another 14 people with them were lost, and a ground and helicopter search located all 14 within a five-mile area, including a pregnant woman and another extremely dehydrated man who were flown to hospitals.

On Sunday, two 911 emergency calls resulted in rescues of two more groups -- six mildly dehydrated people southwest of Ajo and four more near Cowlic on the Tohono O'odham Indian Reservation.
