Border Patrol Rescues Four Illegal Immigrants

Border Patrol agents rescue four illegal immigrants stranded in the desert thanks to a rescue beacon. Agents say as it gets hotter in the Desert Southwest, they're seeing less illegal immigrants try and cross into the U.S. However, they're also stepping up patrols and utilizing rescue beacons to try and save those who might become victims of the vicious desert heat.

In the Desert Southwest, you'll find dozens of rescue beacons designed to save lives. The July 4th weekend is another example of the beacons at work. "On Saturday, July 4th, about 1am, one of our rescue beacons, which is located about 30 miles southeast of Wellton, Arizona was activated. Agents responded and found an illegal alien," says Agent Ben Vik with the U.S. Border Patrol. Vik says 2 hours later, agents found 3 more migrants who had activated the beacon. All four were treated for minor health issues but in good health. Vik says beacons are for anyone who needs help. "A rescue beacon is basically a radio transmitter; if anybody falls into distress in the desert, all they have to do is push this button right here, and it will send a signal to our communications room."

Beacons include a blue flashing strobe light and reflective metals that can be seen for miles around. Vik says the summer is historically not a popular time for immigrants to try and cross the border because of the heat, but that doesn't stop everyone. "There are those few who attempt to risk crossing those deep desert areas and do succumb to the elements; luckily we put these rescue beacons in areas of historically high traffic." Vik says if you break down in the desert, don't try to walk to safety. "Remain with your vehicle; Border Patrol agents will show up, the Sheriff will show up. We have helicopters flying all over the place, don't put your lives in danger and stay safe." In fiscal year 2009, the Yuma Sector has rescued thirty seven people.
