Doctors, nurses rally against anti-immigration legislation

About 300 doctors, nurses and other health professionals from across the nation gathered at the Arizona Capitol Thursday afternoon to protest anti-immigration measures, such as Senate Bill 1070.

Most of the doctors showed up wearing their white coats, despite the heat.

The protest was an unofficial part of a national medical conference being held in Phoenix this week. Participants said anti-immigration laws make patients afraid to seek medical care, putting themselves at risk of becoming even more ill and exposing the entire community to untreated infectious diseases.

"We are calling for a moratorium of all anti-immigration legislation nationally," said Dr. Olveen Carrasquillo from the University of Miami's Miller School of Medicine. "If you try to pass this in our states, 300 of us are going to don our white coats, show at the statehouse and tell you to cut it out."

Dr. Pieter Cohen, of Massachusetts, said he wouldn't have attended the conference in Phoenix if they hadn't offered an opportunity for attendees to protest.

"From the health-care side, there is no question that we need to provide care to everyone," Cohen said.

Nothing prevents these doctors to pay the health care costs for illegals out of their pockets.

These doctors are idiots. I live here in AZ where maternity wards, ERs and entire hospitals are being closed down all over. The government will only pay so much, if they want "real" job security they will support the deportation of these moochers who never pay their medical bills.

Really???? So where the hell were you doc when my AMERICAN friend who did not have health insurance went to the ER and was given a number to the free clinic in addition to pretty much being told to leave?????????
