Ala. Immigration Bill Hot Topic In Local Hispanic Community

Alabama Immigration Bill Hot Topic In Local Hispanic Community

Baldwin County's Hispanic community believes Alabama's immigration bill is unfair.

Baldwin County's growing Hispanic community says Alabama's immigration bill is harsh, unfair and could be considered "racial profiling." We talked to several members of Summerdale's Hispanic community Friday about the controversial Arizona-style immigration bill.

Hispanics we talked to say they're in the U-S legally and moved here to make a decent living and provide a better quality of life for their families. They believe the bill is harassment.

On Thursday, the Alabama Senate approved the immigration bill, just weeks after the House passed their own version of the bill. The bill requires police officers to ask for proof of U-S citizenship on traffic stops then detain the driver or passenger if they can't prove citizenship.

The bill also requires business owners to use "E-Verify"...a computer program that checks immigration status when hiring workers.

The bill is waiting on Governor Robert Bentley to sign it into law.

Mixed Emotions about Possible Arizona-Style Immigration Law in Alabama

    With Video

(MOBILE, Ala.) A controversial bill is flying through the state legislature that would drastically change Alabama's immigration law. The senate passed a bill that's modeled after ones in Arizona, Oklahoma and Missouri requiring proof of citizenship during traffic stops.

It also requires companies to check the legal status of workers. It allows law enforcement to detain or arrest anyone they suspect of being illegal.

"That's just not right," said Tyree White of Mobile. White says he's been the victim of racial profiling himself and believes the new legislation would aim to make it legal. "It's like a badge to stop you because of their skin color."

White echoes critics who've argued it allows police to harass people because they look or sound different.

"Hog wash," said Linda Fobes who supports the legislation Fobes said that with the budget issues state dollars are going to fund illegals. "These people are in our schools, in our colleges, in our hospitals, we can no longer afford to support people in our country illegally who do not pay their fair share of taxes."

Gov. Robert Bentley has asked the sponsors of both competing house and senate bills to come together to create a final version, one that he says can be defended in court.

Boo Hoo Hoo... if there weren't MILLIONS of illegals here ( whom you probably support being here illegally) this wouldn't be happening. And if you are truly "legal" YOU most of all should be protesting YOUR tax dollars going to their aid!

Boo hoo. Go complain to your illegal neighbors. They're the cause of this legislation. If they weren't here bleeding American dry with their demands, there would be no need for it.
