Deportation fears mean no rallies in Phoenix
Wonder if Sheriff Joe has anything to do with that?
Deportation fears mean no rallies in Phoenix
by Daniel González - May. 2, 2008 12:08 AM
The Arizona Republic
Unlike other cities, there were no rallies in support of immigration reform Thursday in Phoenix.
Some of the largest pro-immigrant marches in the country took place in Phoenix last year and the year before. But organizers of previous marches said aggressive immigration enforcement has made immigrants afraid of being deported.
"People are terrified. If you want to talk about terrorism in America, this is it," said Elias Bermudez, founder of the group Immigrants Without Borders.
The group was instrumental in organizing pro-immigrant demonstrations that drew more than 15,000 participants on May 1, 2007, and as many as 200,000 on April 10, 2006.
Bermudez said it would have been irresponsible to organize a march this year given the volatile demonstrations that have erupted both in support and against recent crime sweeps conducted by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.
"It is dangerous putting people on the street right now," Bermudez said.
A small group of marchers was expected to leave Tucson today for a 10-day trek through the desert to call for more humane treatment of immigrants. The event, called the Citizens Walk for Human Dignity, will end at the state Capitol in Phoenix on May 11.

If the protesters were legal immigrants, they would have had nothing to fear. Which goes to show that the majority of the protesters are illegal aliens and have NO rights to demand anything from us!
