Fifty Bags of Trash Collected Along Immigrants' Trail

Volunteers filled about 50 jumbo-sized trash bags while cleaning up litter left behind in a southern Arizona canyon by illegal immigrants crossing into the country.

The trail in Ash Canyon, which is frequently used by border crossers, was littered with plastic bottles, metal cans, clothing and backpacks.

Monday's effort was the second in a series of cleanups being organized by Hereford resident Steve Willsey, who thanked the roughly 25 volunteers by telling them ``you are doing a good thing for the forest and for this beautiful country.''

Litter is a common problem among trails used by illegal immigrants, who often discard used water bottles and other items as they trek through the desert on their trips into the country.
