Governor, legislators spar over border troops

Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano and conservative Republican state lawmakers are sparring again over how to deploy and use National Guard troops at the Mexican border.

Napolitano, a moderate Democrat, wants state troops to continue work in a support role when it comes to border security. A number of conservatives at the Legislature are introducing legislation to have troops take a more direct role in border security. The Republicans are upset over a recent incident when some guard troops retreated from border interlopers.

The governor said Wednesday the Guard's support role and recent federal and state efforts on the border have helped reduce illegal crossings.

Napolitano crossed party lines last year to support a border security plan put forward by President Bush, which included using the National Guard troops from various states in support roles.
