TUCSON, AZ -- Officials say Tucson Border Patrol agents were assaulted while attempting to apprehend undocumented immigrants in three separate incidents over the weekend.

Agents assigned to the Sonoita Station were physically attacked and an agent from the Nogales Station had to wrestle with a suspect who earlier fled from the Interstate 19 checkpoint, authorities said.

According to a press release from Tucson Border Patrol, agents are experiencing an upswing in violence and assaults. Tucson Sector agents were reportedly assaulted 134 times during the first five months of this fiscal year, versus 93 assaults during the same period last year.

"Agents must constantly remain vigilant to threats from a variety of sources," said Chief Patrol Agent Victor M. Manjarrez, Jr. "Their perseverance is a fundamental component of our success in improving operational control of our Nation's borders."
