An illegal immigrant with a history of domestic violence is facing up to life in prison for the 2007 shooting death of his girlfriend in Chandler, the Maricopa County Attorney’s office announced on Monday.

Ivan Hernandez-Olvera, 28, of Tempe was found guilty of first-degree murder in Maricopa County Superior Court on Thursday, according to information in a release issued by the county attorney’s office.

Hernandez-Olvera and his girlfriend, Felicia Alarcorn, 22, were fighting while riding in a car together on Nov. 17, 2007, moments before he pulled over the car on Warner Road near Price Road and shot Alarcorn multiple times, according to Chandler police.

Witnesses saw Hernandez-Olvera pull the car over and the pair arguing behind the car before he pulled out a gun and shot the woman.

Hernandez-Olvera got back in the car and sped off and later called police to go check on Alarcorn, who was pronounced dead at a hospital, according to the county attorney’s office.

Authorities believe Hernandez-Olvera was trying to flee to Mexico when he and another man were apprehended during a brief foot chase by police and border patrol agents the day after the shooting. A 9 mm handgun was found inside his car.

Hernandez-Olvera will be sentenced April 15.
