BISBEE — Four illegal immigrants charged in connection with a string of three break-ins that took place in Cochise County in early December pleaded not guilty during an arraignment hearing on Friday.

    Alberto Jimenez-Garcia, 36; Alejandrino Lara-Silva, 19; Natalio Valenzuela-Valdez, 41; and Yerco Vedobch-Arrvayo, 18, were indicted on a total of 41 counts by a grand jury Dec. 13.

According to the indictments, the incidents took place in the 10900 block of S. Highway 181 in Willcox and in the 8800 block of E. Goforth Lane in Pearce on Dec. 5 and in the 10600 block of N. Wiegand Pratt Road in Elfrida on Dec. 6.

Cochise County Superior Court judge Donna M. Beumler scheduled a pretrial hearing and jury trial dates for the four defendants. The cases are assigned to Division 2.

A pretrial hearing for all three cases is set for March 3, 2008. The trial for the Willcox incident will be held on April 29, 2008, the trial for the Pearce incident will occur on May 13, 2008, and the trial for the Elfrida incident will take place May 27, 2008.

All four men are charged with first-degree burglary of the Willcox residence, breaking a window, and theft of a Winchester bolt action .270 rifle, a Rossi .357 revolver and a Marlin bolt action .22 rifle. Advertisement

Lara-Silva, Valenzuela-Valdez and Vedobch-Arrvayo are charged with entering the Pearce home with intent to commit theft while possessing a deadly weapon, kidnapping, robbery while armed and robbery while aided by accomplices.

Lara-Silva is charged with aggravated assault. Valenzuela-Valdez and Vedobch-Arrvayo are charged with another count of robbery while aided by accomplices.

Lara-Silva, Valenzuela-Valdez and Vedobch-Arrvayo are charged with entering the Elfrida house with intent to commit theft while possessing a deadly weapon as well as theft of a Taurus PT-92 9 mm semiautomatic handgun, a Ruger .357 magnum revolver and a Heckler & Koch .22 caliber revolver.

Beumler said all four men will continue to be held in jail without bond. It is a requirement of state law because they are illegal immigrants accused of committing a major crime.

Burglary was once a 'one man' job--now it's extended to teams and groups. In the Joe Horn Texas incident, two illegals were involved. In this case there are four........our world is becoming even more dangerous.

BISBEE — An illegal immigrant who was involved in a string of three break-ins in Cochise County was sentenced to 20 years in prison in Cochise County Superior Court on Friday.

Alejandrino Lara-Silva, 20, entered into an agreement pleading guilty to 12 felony counts for crimes occurring in homes in Willcox, Pearce and Elfrida in December 2007. Attorneys stipulated he would be sentenced to between 15 and 20 years in prison.

During a sentencing hearing on Friday afternoon in Division 5 court, Chief Deputy County Attorney Doyle Johnstun said the sentence of 20 years is justified due to aggravating factors.

He said the defendant acted with accomplices, had entered the U.S. illegally with bundles of marijuana, stole guns and tied up a woman in Pearce. He said the case would have been much different if the defendant had only entered the residences to take food and water and items to keep warm.

Tiffany Huffman-Spiers, the defense attorney who represented Silva, asked the court to sentence him to 15 years. She said he initially entered the homes out of desperation in search of food and water. She said he felt pressured to help tie up the woman.

Judge James Conlogue decided to sentence him to a total of 20 years in prison, including five years for the Willcox incident, 10 years for the Pearce incident and five years for the Elfrida incident. He was sentenced to additional time for each case, but those terms will run concurrent to the 20-year total.

Conlogue ordered Silva pay $1,990 in restitution for the Willcox incident. He is allowing the victims in Pearce and Elfrida to submit claims of restitution within 30 days.

Two other illegal immigrants, Yerco Vedobch-Arrvayo and Natalio Valenzuela-Valdez, also were involved in all three break-ins. Their cases are pending sentencing.

Arrvayo appeared in Division 3 court on Friday and his attorney, Tori Bryant, requested a mitigation hearing. Judge Wallace Hoggatt scheduled it for Jan. 26.

A fourth illegal immigrant, Alberto Jimenez-Garcia, was only involved in the Willcox incident. He entered into a plea deal and was sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison in July.
