Immigration Agency to Open Location inside Phoenix Prison

March 28th, 2007 @ 5:32pm by Associated Press

PHOENIX - The federal agency that deports illegal immigrants is scheduled to open its first office inside a prison later this week in an effort to expedite the deportation process.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement is opening a trailer inside the Arizona State Prison Complex in Phoenix on Friday.

Staffing the trailer will be six Arizona Department of Corrections employees who have been trained as immigration officers, two actual immigration officers and a supervisor from Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The Arizona Department of Corrections said the trailer will be the immigration agency's first location inside a prison.

The move is the latest manifestation of a 2005 agreement between the Department of Corrections and Immigration and Customs Enforcement to quicken the deportation process.

Since then, 17 corrections workers have been trained and certified as immigration agents.
