PHOENIX The presiding judge of Maricopa County has issued an order that everyone booked into jail will be asked about their citizenship status.
Judge Barbara Rodriguez Mundell's order supersedes a previous directive against asking or reporting on someone's citizenship.

That led to accusations that the court was circumventing a voter-approved measure that denies bail for criminal suspects who are illegal immigrants.

Mundell's order came a day after Arizona Supreme Court Chief Justice Ruth McGregor concluded that county workers "may" ask about citizenship.

A spokesman for the county attorney says they're pleased with Judge Mundell's quote: "change of heart."
