Nearly nine tons of marijuana seized at Mexican border in San Diego

    Associated Press - November 10, 2007 9:04 PM ET

SAN DIEGO (AP) - It's being called the largest marijuana bust ever at the Calexico port of entry. Federal agents say they have seized nearly nine tons of pot inside a shipment of flat panel television sets.

Drug dogs alerted border patrol agents to the tractor-trailer Friday afternoon. Inside they found over 1,000 packages of pot along with the TVs.

The accused smuggler is a 25-year-old Mexican and registered participant in the FAST program.

FAST is an agreement between Mexico, Canada and the United States to expedite trade. "Low-risk" drivers must submit an application and agree to a security profile.

    Now that is interesting...
A FAST participant driver gets busted for 9 tons of pot? Where is the "Secure" part of that agreement on the Mexican side of the border? Didn't the transportation secretary say there was no danger of smuggling or WMDs? Which one is hauling the dirty bomb, or has it been delivered already?

They mean they'll get massive loads of pot in to the U.S. very FAST. And also every other contraband including humans. Welcome to the harvest.

Feds seize tons of pot in Calexico
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized 8.85 tons of marijuana from a truck from Mexico on Friday afternoon, the largest marijuana load ever to be seized at the Calexico port of entry, officials said Saturday.

A 25-year-old Mexicali resident registered with the Free and Secure Trade program was driving a 1992 GMC tractor-trailer with a shipment described as flat-panel-screen televisions. As the truck waited to enter the U.S. about 4:20 p.m., border patrol agents with a police dog checked the truck. The narcotics dog alerted agents of the truck's load and agents then inspected the load with a gamma-ray system that showed images of anomalies inside the shipment, officials said.

When agents opened the truck doors, several large packages fell out. Officials said 1,019 large packages of marijuana valued roughly $67.3 million were seized. The driver was arrested and booked into the Imperial County jail.
