Man arrested in stabbing of Mesa worker is illegally in U.S.

A man accused stabbing a woman with knife 37 times as she opened a the door to the Mesa check-cashing business where she worked is being charged with attempted first-degree murder.

The man, Jorge Luis Miranda Avila, is in the U.S. illegally, according to Mesa police spokesman Ed Wessing.

Avila, 28, was arrested Wednesday by Mesa police for the Aug. 31 stabbing.

“The female victim was opening the business for the day when she noticed a long-time customer standing near her. She continued inside and opened the inner employee door when she felt a push from behind. As she turned and looked at the suspect, he laughed at her and began stabbing her with a 6- to 8-inch knife. The attack continued as the victim fell; she was stabbed a total of 37 times before the suspect fled the area,â€
