Identity fraud is exploding in Ohio

Identity fraud is exploding in Ohio

    UP 100 PERCENT IN 2010

    THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The offenses vary from using another person’s name and Social Security number during a traffic stop to forging documents to obtain a fake driver’s license.

It’s all identity fraud, and the State Highway Patrol says there has been an alarming increase in the crime this year. Troopers have investigated 373 cases of identity fraud since Jan. 1, a more than 100 percent increase in the number of cases filed by this time last year.

It’s the largest percentage increase of any type of crime the patrol handles.

The patrol investigates the use of fraudulent documents to obtain legitimate state documents and the use of false identification during a traffic stop to hide a criminal background or to get out of a ticket.

Trooper Archie Spradlin, an investigator with the patrol who handles identity crimes, said there is no one group responsible or no one reason for the increase. Identity crime is perpetuated by a variety of criminals, including con men, illegal immigrants and violent criminals, he said.

Spradlin said troopers have pulled over people for traffic violations and discovered more than a dozen fraudulent Ohio driver’s licenses, all with different names and issued from different Bureau of Motor Vehicles offices.

In cases of illegal immigration, suspects do not always enter the country illegally. Instead, they might come on work or student visas and then buy or forge documents to get a state identification card. That card typically is all they need to then get an Ohio driver’s license, Spradlin said.

Sometimes, the fraud is more sinister, such as the one the patrol began investigating this year with federal and state agencies, including the Ohio Board of Cosmetology. It involved fears that some of the thousands of nail-salon workers in the state could be human-trafficking victims.

Authorities say traffickers are forging identities for Asian immigrants, who are forced to work in salons to pay off the debt for smuggling them into the country.

But criminals do not make up only fake identities, Spradlin said. They also steal information to impersonate other people and can use those identities to get a job, open bank accounts or take out car loans and mortgages.

“It’s grown and matured into a criminal empire,â€

Wish the article included info re whether these people are being incarcerated and/or deported - or would doing those things be unAmerican? Maybe we should as Nancy Pelosi.

I think that goes on in every state and with that, many people's credit reports are probably messed up, preventing innocent people from buying homes, cars or anything on credit. How would you feel if someone, legal or illegal were using your kid's identity to work just because they HAVE TO?

Part of this situation is a direct result of the SB1070. Regardless of the press you read about them going back to Mexico they are moving to states that they consider "friendlier", and Ohio is one of those states as is Minnesota, Pennsylvania, and a host of others. They are staying away from New Mexico (no work) and Colorado which is a surprise. They will also seek out states that have generous public assistance benefit programs. Illegal aliens have an unbelievable underground networking system. Thank cell phones. Would you believe the information I have was passed on to me by the parent of an elementary grade schooler, who has a new Hispanic student in her class from Arizona.
