Even as his opponents work to oust him for his views on immigration enforcement, Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon will lead a task force on immigration reform for the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

Gordon was appointed to chair the conference's Comprehensive Immigration Reform Task Force by Manuel A. Diaz, the mayor of Miami and the conference's president.

As chair, Gordon will lead other mayors in developing a reform proposal to be shared with top U.S. officials.
"I want to get the next President and Congress to make securing our border and a comprehensive immigration policy the top priority," Gordon said.

The task force is expected to begin meeting this fall.

Gordon's appointment comes as his critics work together the 23,751 valid signatures needed to force a recall collection. The signatures must be submitted by the end of the month.

Phillip Quihuis, who is leading the recall drive, called Gordon's appointment "a very bad idea."

"It's sort of like having the wolf guarding the henhouse," Quihuis said.

Quihuis launched the recall after Gordon began criticizing Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio for alleged racial profiling during crime-suppression sweeps.

"Everyone but the extremists wants a solution, and wants a real solution," Gordon said
