Motorist dies after collision with sheriff's vehicle

PHOENIX (AP) -- An illegal immigrant is being blamed for a fatal car accident in west Phoenix.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office says the man rammed an S-U-V being driven by an undercover sheriff's narcotics officer several times, then pulled alongside and forced the S-U-V into oncoming traffic, where it struck a car. The driver of that vehicle, 46-year-old Phoenix resident Nanuma Lavulavu, later died at a hospital.

The deputy received minor injuries.

The 26-year-old suspect fled on foot but was caught about a half block from the scene of Tuesday evening's accident.

The sheriff office says the man, Guadalupe Perez-Borjorquez, will face charges of aggravated assault and second-degree murder.

PHOENIX -- A 46-year-old woman died after being hit during a chase between a sheriff's deputy and man throwing beer bottles from his car. And one state lawmaker says ultimately, the blame should be pinned on Congress.

The suspect had been deported 5 times.

State Rep. Russell Pearce says Congress has sold out America. "We have hundreds of thousands of criminal aliens, violent criminal aliens, child molesters, drug pushers, drug users, carjackers, home invaders who just haven't been arrested yet and we're going to give all of those amnesty and a Z visa. This is typical."

"What Congress is doing is so horrific, so outrageous. It's the sell-out of America. We're going to do great harm, not only in terms of trillions of dollars in cost, because they use the social programs three to four times greater than native born Americans, but we're talking about crime."

Sheriff Joe Arpaio said his deputy did the right thing, because the illegal immigrant was trying to kill him.

Arpaio said he hopes this tragedy will serve as an example to the U.S. Senate that the proposed amnesty program now being debated on Capitol Hill is a bad idea.

Pearce agreed. "Before we start giving amnesty -- and that's what that bill of cards does to anybody in this country -- we ought to recognize the damage, arrest those that are here, deport and then make sure whoever comes in our borders, we know who they are."
