The Department of Public Safety has formed a new task force to help law enforcement agencies along the border crack down gang- and immigration-related crimes.
The project began after law enforcement agencies along the border asked for help dismantling organizations involved in gang activity and drug and human smuggling, according to a statement from the Department of Public Safety.
The Department of Public Safety conceptualized the project - called the Arizona Border Strike Force - in January under the direction of Gov. Janet Napolitano, and it's effort has been named "Operation Full Court Press."
The task force will be overseen by the state's Gang and Immigration Intelligence Enforcement Mission - or G.II.T.E.M.
On Jan. 26 and Jan. 27, G.II.T.E.M. detectives, Border Patrol agents and DPS and Sierra Vista Police Department officers conducted a sweep in Sierra Vista for those involved with gang- and border-related crime.
During the operation authorities turned two illegal immigrants over to the Border Patrol and made 18 arrests including two on suspicion of DUI and 10 on suspicion of felony charges.
Authorities also issued a search warrant at a residence and seized 1,690 pounds of marijuana and made two arrests, according to the statement.
