AZ. officer assaulted, patrol car stolen by alien smuggler

DPS officer assaulted, patrol car stolen near Casa Grande

The Associated Press Arizona Daily Star
    October 26, 2010 2:35 pm

SACATON, Ariz. — The Department of Public Safety says one of its officers was assaulted and his patrol car stolen Tuesday afternoon north of Casa Grande near the Sacaton rest stop along westbound Interstate 10.

DPS spokesman Bart Graves tells The Associated Press the officer made a traffic stop at 12:30 p.m.

The officer was attempting to arrest the driver when a struggle ensued and the male suspect assaulted the officer and drove off in the officer’s patrol vehicle.

Units pursued the vehicle. Graves says the driver got off the freeway and drove into the desert. He later abandoned the patrol car about three-quarters of a mile east of I-10 near Casa Grande.

Authorities used helicopters and ground crews in their search of the desert for the driver described as a heavy set Hispanic.

Graves says the officer is OK.

The Department of Public Safety says one of its officers was assaulted and his patrol car stolen Tuesday afternoon north of Casa Grande near the Sacaton (SAK'-uh-tohn) rest stop along westbound Interstate 10.

DPS spokesman Bart Graves tells The Associated Press the officer made a traffic stop after detectives located a stolen pickup truck carrying suspected illegal immigrants.

As the officer assisted with the arrest, the driver punched the officer in the face and then stole a DPS patrol car.

Graves says the driver got off I-10 and later abandoned the patrol car 30 miles south of Phoenix.

The driver was eventually arrested and faces multiple charges.

PHOENIX - A suspect is in custody after he allegedly punched a Department of Public Safety officer in the face and fled in a patrol vehicle Tuesday.

DPS spokesman Kevin Woods said state vehicle theft task force detectives spotted a stolen Dodge pickup truck on Interstate 10 near Casa Grande around noon and called a highway patrol officer for help stopping the driver.

During the traffic stop, the driver of the stolen truck drove into an unmarked DPS patrol car, got out and assaulted a uniformed DPS officer and fled in a marked DPS Chevrolet Tahoe, Woods said.

The suspect drove toward the Valley on I-10, eventually pulling off along a dirt road and canal about 30 miles south of Phoenix, according to Woods.

Law enforcement officers searched the desert area by air and ground, taking the suspect into custody around 2 p.m.

Woods said there were seven people in the pickup truck, all believed to be undocumented immigrants. He said five stayed with the stolen truck, with the driver now in custody and one other still on the loose.

DPS said all the suspected undocumented immigrants were turned over to the Border Patrol.

A suspected human smuggler rammed an undercover Department of Public Safety vehicle, then beat up a uniformed officer before escaping in a marked DPS SUV, authorities said Tuesday.

DPS spokesperson Bart Graves said detectives in an unmarked DPS vehicle heading west on Interstate 10 near Casa Grande spotted a Dodge pickup that they suspected was stolen and called for assistance.

The driver refused to pull over and slammed into the unmarked DPS car.

Authorities said the driver then got out of the truck, assaulted a uniformed officer, then got into his marked Chevy Tahoe DPS vehicle and drove westbound toward Phoenix.

There were a total of seven people in the truck. The driver and one other person fled on foot. The other five, all suspected illegal immigrants, were taken into custody.

Authorities found the vehicle abandoned about 30 miles south of Phoenix, and arrested the suspect about 1 p.m.

The suspect who escaped on foot had not been located as of Tuesday afternoon.
