State lawmaker Russell Pearce said he appreciates Governor Napolitano's support on his most recent immigration bills, especially employer sanctions.

"I appreciate it very much and think she does deserve credit for standing tall on this issue," said Pearce.

For her part, Napolitano is publicly defending the new penalties for hiring illegal immigrants, and said Pearce is right on the issue.

In previous years, Napolitano vetoed 16 immigration bills, most of them sponsored by Pearce.

Napolitano has signed three Pearce immigration bills -- the employer sanctions bill, a bill that denies state services without proof of citizenship and a bill that denies bail to illegal immigrants accused of serious crimes.

"It took her a long time to get on board, but I am grateful."

"I just want to make people sure that we're not dating. But she has come my way and I am very grateful for that."

He said they can disagree on lots of issues "but when she's right, she's right."
