Police Report: Sheriff's Office detains 12 suspected illegals

Monday, January 28, 2008

Yavapai County detention officers took 12 people they suspect are illegal immigrants into custody on Sunday and turned them over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The sheriff's office heard that three vans dropped off 30 to 40 people near County Line Road north of Interstate 40 to the northeast of Ash Fork and then left.

Units from the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office, Coconino County Sheriff's Office and the Department of Public Safety found 12 people and took them to the Ash Fork sub-station. Lucy Kreutzer, a local resident, and deputies bought them food and drinks.

The 12 people said that originally 23 people were in the three vans. They told the sheriff's office that the "coyotes" got nervous and dropped them off in the Ash Fork area.

Officers are still trying to locate the remaining 11 people.
