A state senator says South Dakota must crack down on businesses that hire illegal immigrants.

Sen. Craig Tieszen (TEEZ'-en) of Rapid City on Tuesday asked a Senate committee to approve a bill that would penalize those who employ illegal immigrants.

He says federal officials do not do much to enforce a similar federal law, so the state should begin preventing businesses from hiring people who are in the country illegally.

Tieszen says if no jobs are available, illegal immigrants likely will not come to South Dakota.

The Judiciary Committee delayed a vote on the bill until Thursday because the panel ran out of time on Tuesday to hear all of the people who want to testify on the measure.
