AZ: SB 1070 Supporters Rally Outside Statehouse

    August 2, 2010

SB 1070 Supporters Rally Outside Statehouse

Message: It's not about race, it's about obeying the law

Hundreds of supporters rallied at Wesley Bolin Plaza voicing their support for the state's new immigration enforcement law.

The rally was hosted by KFYI's Mike Broomhead, who told the crowd that the issue is not one of race, it's about obeying the law.

To demonstrate that, the first speaker he brought on stage was Ted Hayes, an African-American civil rights activist.

Hayes told the crowd there's no excuse for entering the U.S. illegally. "They say, 'We're being oppressed; we're being treated bad." . . . You know what? Even if you are being treated bad, you asked for it," he told the crowd to cheers.

It was a common theme to the rally, which featured several speakers from minority groups expressing their support for the new law that makes being in the state illegally a crime.

Mark Spencer, president of the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association, says the purest form of hatred is indifference.

"Where were the open border advocates and their banners when half of Latino homicide victims in the City of Phoenix were killed by illegals?," Spencer rhetorically asked. "Perhaps they were sitting in the lap of luxury. Perhaps they were sitting in the lap of indifference."

The event was capped by a speech by the law's author and chief sponsor, State Senator Russell Pearce.

Pearce says it's time for the federal government to do something about illegal immigration once and for all. "If they say you're going to secure the borders, then secure the borders," Pearce told the crowd. "If you say you're going to enforce the law, enforce the law. If you take an oath of office, you ought to keep it.

"Illegal is not a race; it's a crime. And here in Arizona, we recognize that."

Pearce took exception to the injunction issued by U.S. District Court Judge Susan Bolton that put key provisions of the law on hold.

"She said she's concerned about the burden it'll place on the federal government. Never mind the burden it places on you -- the deaths, the maimings. The cost -- $2.7 billion in Arizona, according to a new study, to educate, medicate and incarcerate (illegal immigrants)."

Before -- and during -- the rally, a small group of counter-demonstrators riled the crowd of supporters by laying an American flag on the ground and spray-painting words on it, including "Impeach Brewer" and "Deport Arpaio."

Supporters shouted at the demonstrators, screaming that soldiers died for the American flag. Police were able to keep the groups separated and prevented them from coming to blows.

Ted Hayes doesn't talk like this ("you asked for it"), I am sure they took this out of context, creative editing to make him look unfeeling. He is a very big hearted man, but he also loves the USA more than any one person or group of people.

Didn't I read a story about a high school student who was punished for tearing down a Mexican flag hung at his school. Yet these ignorant illegals can throw our flag on the ground, descrate it and that's okay?

From one who was there back in the '60's, anyone who took a piece of the American Flag and stitched it to the seat of their pants was immediately arrested and hauled off to jail! Desecrating our flag is a crime!

Kinda off the topic, but does anyone know why our soldiers wear the American flag stitched BACKWARDS on their uniforms? We asked soldiers around Fort Bragg and the 104th Airborne Museum, but no one knew. Does anyone know?

Why is the U.S. flag worn "backwards" on the uniform?
    By Rod Powers, About.com Guide

Question: Why is the U.S. flag worn "backwards" on the uniform?

Answer: Army Regulation 670-1, Wear and Appearance of Army Uniforms and Insignia, is the governing authority for the wear of Army uniforms. Paragraph 28-18 governs the wear of the United States Flag on Army Uniforms.
The flag may only be worn on the utility and organizational uniforms (such as the camouflage BDU). The flag may only be worn during joint-duty and multinational deployments. When the servicemember returns to home station, the flag must be removed. (Guide Note: A message went out in February 2004 changing this restriction, and making the U.S. Flag a mandatory uniform componant for all soldiers, effective October 1, 2005).

Chapter 1, Title 4, United States Code, provides for the design of the U.S. flag and specifies the colors as red, white, and blue. Colors other than red, white, and blue violate the U.S. Code; therefore, subdued-colored flags are not authorized for wear. Joint commanders have to make the decision as to whether or not the wear of a full-color flag, for morale purposes, is more important than having all aspects of the uniform camouflaged.

When approved for wear, the full-color U.S. flag cloth replica is sewn 1/2 inch below the right shoulder seam of the temperate, hot-weather, enhanced hot-weather, and desert BDU; the BDU field jacket; and the cold-weather uniform. The flag is worn on the right shoulder, because, in the military, the "place of honor" is to a military member's right.

The full-color U.S. flag cloth replica is worn so that the star field faces forward, or to the flag’s own right. When worn in this manner, the flag is facing to the observer’s right, and gives the effect of the flag flying in the breeze as the wearer moves forward.

The rule dates back to the Army's early history, when both mounted cavalry and infantry units would designate a standard bearer, who carried the Colors into battle. As he charged, his forward momentum caused the flag to stream back. Since the Stars and Stripes are mounted with the canton closest to the pole, that section stayed to the right, while the stripes flew to the left.
