Lawmakers push pro-immigrant bill
By SERGIO R.BUSTOS
sbustos@MiamiHerald.com
Two Miami lawmakers will join several pro-immigrant groups today to urge passage of a bill in Congress that could help thousands of undocumented immigrant students attend college and become legal residents.
Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart, R-Fla., and his brother, Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Fla., will team up with the Florida Immigrant Coalition and other groups to promote ``The American Dream Act.''
The bill, if passed, would grant in-state tuition to undocumented immigrant students and permit those students, along with those serving in the military, to obtain a green card and legally remain in the United States.
Passage won't be easy. Similar bills have languished in Congress over the years, with most Republicans opposed to any kind of legislation that would provide benefits to those who broke the law in entering the country.
This year may be different. Most Democrats, who now control both the Senate and the House, tend to support such a law. And President Bush, a Republican, favors legislation that would allow illegal immigrants to earn legal residency.
The lawmakers and the others will hold a news conference, beginning at 10:30 a.m., in the lobby area of the Rafael Diaz-Balart Hall at Florida International University's School of Law.

I hope it doesn't go through as why should they get a break. If they do then they will finish school and be able to sponsor their entire family once they start working. What frightens me is how the Cubans are now in a hurry to help all these poor illegals. They only recently began with their sympathy for Haitians. In my opinion they are doing this in preparation for the day they loose they wetfoot /dryfoot policy and then need help from others as they will be in the same boat.

In South Florida it is almost impossible to get in office if you are not Cuban or possible another Hispanic. They control the school board in Miami and most judges in Dade County are of Cuban background as well. In fact one of them bragged and said don't bother running for judge if your are non Hispanic. This is what it has come down to. I think in many cases Hispanic voters don't look at what the candidate has to say but rather if they are Hispanic unless all candidates happen to be Hispanic. It is sad but true.
