Mexico's top diplomat in Arizona braces for exodus of Mexican citizens

Mexico's new consul general in Phoenix is appealing for Mexicans in the state to remain calm, but is still bracing for an exodus because of the state's tough new immigration law, The Arizona Republic reports.

"We are sending the message. Stay calm. You don't have to take your kids right away (and leave)," Victor Manuel Treviño Escudero, 50, tells the newspaper. "But if the school year ends, and the law is enforced, then you have to take proper action."

Treviño Escudero oversees five consulates in Arizona that serve as many as 750,000 Mexicans living legally and illegally in the state.

After the law passed, Treviño Escudero says, the number of people visiting the consulate to apply for Mexican passports and Mexican birth certificates for their U.S.-born children jumped from about 20 a day to 100 a day, indicating that many people were considering leaving Arizona and returning to Mexico.

Treviño Escudero, who arrived less than three weeks after the new law was signed, said he respects the sovereignty and laws of the United States, including the new immigration law, "but that doesn't mean we have to like it."

The consulate is beefing up staff to deal with protecting the rights of Mexicans and plans to distribute thousands of brochures that include a toll-free number to call for legal advice and to report abuse by authorities.

Where's the "toll free" number for American citizens who are the victims of illegal aliens?

What Victor Manuel Treviño Escudero is REALLY concerned about is that 750,000 Mexicans will return to their home country and ask the Mexican government for free healthcare, education and welfare benefits. Oh, and the Mexican gangs might go home as well.

We need some Border Patrol on the California/Arizona border to keep the fleeing illegal aliens from entering California.

Can you imagine if even half of the 750K leave?

How to deport 375,000 illegals - enforce laws.

    What a great idea!

If every state would do this we might actually be able to speak English in CA or TX!

Can you imagine - no more Push one for English? No more being a second class citizen in your own country!
