Two suspected human smugglers have been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison in connection with the death of a 15-year-old who was trying to come to the United States.

Juan Jose Fimbres-Moreno and Bruno Alberto Gonzalez-Espinoza of Mexico pleaded guilty to transportation of illegal immigrants for profit resulting in death.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says two illegal immigrants went to a ranch in Sonoita in April 2007 to report the death of one of their companions.

They told U.S. Border Patrol agents that they had been with a group of 15 other immigrants and were led by two men. They said the guides and group abandoned them when the teenager died the night before.

The two men later identified Fimbres and Gonzalez as the smugglers. The teenager died of exposure due to hyperthermia.
