Suspect in Rape of 11-Year-Old Arrested

Police say he's in the U.S. illegally

AVONDALE - Avondale Police have arrested a man they say sexually assaulted an 11-year-old girl over the weekend.

Osvaldo Mercado-Ortiz, 22, was taken into custody Sunday after the victim's mother reported the crime. Her daughter told her that Mercado-Ortiz raped her in the laundry room at their mobile home park.

The victim and the suspect are not related -- they live in the same mobile home complex.

Mercado-Ortiz has been arrested on charges of sexual assault, sexual misconduct with a minor and molestation of a child.

Osvaldo Mercado-Ortiz also had two outstanding warrants for his arrest. Police also say he's in the country illegally.

He's being held without bond.
