Mexicans Living on Texas Gulf Hurry Home

By OLGA R. RODRIGUEZ, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 20 minutes ago

MONTERREY, Mexico - Hundreds of Mexicans living on the Texas Gulf Coast were rushing home Thursday to avoid Hurricane Rita, while authorities in northern Mexico readied shelters and prepared for heavy rains.

In Nuevo Laredo, across from Laredo, Texas, Mexican families coming from Houston, Galveston, South Padre Island, Corpus Christi and Pasadena, Texas, waited in long lines to get temporary import permits for their cars.

"We're heading to Monclova because what happened in New Orleans could also happen there," said Moises Ramirez, a resident of Pasadena, Texas, who was heading to the Mexican border state of Coahuila with six relatives.

Nuevo Laredo authorities said families crossing from Texas started coming to the border city late Wednesday, and by Thursday morning more than 1,000 people had crossed into Mexico.

"Hearing Rita was one of the most powerful hurricanes in the history of the Gulf was enough for me to leave," said Roberto Garcia, who left his home in Corpus Christi and was heading to a suburb of Monterrey, where his family lives.

The influx of Mexicans fleeing the Texas Gulf Coast was expected to increase, and authorities were adding customs agents and personnel at the border.

Many families in northern Mexico have relatives in Texas, and South Padre Island is a popular vacation spot for people from Monterrey.

In Nuevo Leon state, which includes Monterrey, Gov. Natividad Gonzalez sent a letter to Texas Gov. Rick Perry offering to send in medical and rescue crews. Gonzalez also said Nuevo Leon was prepared to set up shelters near the border in case they are needed.

"Just like you have helped the victims of Katrina, we in Nuevo Leon are ready to offer help to our friends in Texas," Gonzalez wrote.

Salvador Trevino, public safety director for Tamaulipas state, which borders the Texas Rio Grande Valley, said no evacuations have been ordered because Rita is expected to make landfall in Galveston, Texas.

Oh my Gosh. They're going to run home while the storm hits and then run back with a bunch more relatives and pretend they're all from the ravaged area

Not to worry !! Our great President of the United States won't let them get away with it

(If I think of any more jokes for today, I'll let you know).

They are going back willfully? What a surprise! I am sure though, after the hurricane has devastated parts of Texas, the illegals will flock back across to take the reconstruction jobs from legal, taxpaying Americans. The illegal flow across the border will be longer than the traffic jam caused by the evacuees and I am sure our president will say that Americans don't want carpentry, brick mason, or landscaping jobs, therefore, we need the "undocumented workers" . Funny thing, my husband's carpentry job is the one and only job he has ever loved. I am waiting for him to be laid off and replaced by illegals like happened to most of former co-workers. Now my husband has to deal with trying to speak "sign" language to the illegals in order to get the job done. Needless to say, he comes home very aggravated and ill, then I have to deal with him! .
P.S. I wore my "MINUTEMEN" shirt to work again today and was cussed in Spanish by an illegal Costa Rican guy that the company I work for hired to replace a 7 year, loyal employee. It's that kind of attitude from the illegals that makes me fight all that much harder! I just turned and began to sing "We're the Minutemen" song to him. I am sure he loved that!

Why don't you just drop the dime on the illegal guy? Learn Spanish! I know it (6th grade through senior year in school) and every time I hear Spanish I listen for talk about coming here illegally. They think that White people are incapable of knowing it, and spout off conversations around them that can be used as EVIDENCE for the ICE.

I dropped the dime on a bunch of illegals that I found out about in Maine who were working at a restaurant, but I still don't know if it went down. These people were talking (en Espanol) about the original chef of the place: they brought him in illegally from Tijuana, stole all his recipes, and then fired him. Even though he was illegal, I feel bad for the cook. Now he's screwed, and the best he can hope for is deportation.
