Minnesota Lawmaker Offers Sanctuary City Legislation

Minnesota Lawmaker Offers Sanctuary City Legislation
    Thursday, March 15, 2012, 7:44 AM EDT

Minnesota State Rep. Bob Barrett has offered legislation that would prohibit local municipalities in the state from forbidding its employees from sharing information with federal immigration authorities. The state's two largest cities -- Minneapolis and St. Paul -- are currently sanctuary cities.

"Certainly, one thing we can take away from the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001, is that communication between the different branches of government is critically important for the security of our citizens, and the lack of communication between jurisdictions results in tragedy," Rep. Barrett said.

The bill, HF358, has already passed through the House Judiciary Policy and Finance Committee on a voice vote. It will now move to the House floor for consideration.

"This bill supports immigration that happens through the current legal process that our country has had in place for hundreds of years to support immigration to the United States, Rep. Barrett said.
