Bahamian authorities detain 230 illegal migrants in raids.
NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) - Authorities detained 230 illegal immigrants in a series of raids today.
It's the second major roundup in less than a month. Police and immigration officials detained 208 Haitians and 22 Jamaicans. At least 17 were children. The raids were in residential neighborhoods in the capital of Nassau. Bahamian authorities say they will send the people back to their home countries.
More than 260 illegal immigrants, mostly Haitians, were detained in raids early last month.
The Bahamas repatriated more than 3-thousand migrants last year. It has sent at least 430 home this year.
The Bahamas is often used as a stepping stone for migrants trying to reach the United States. The closest Bahamian island is about 55 miles from Florida.
