OSSINING - A man accused of injuring his 7-week-old daughter made another brief appearance in Village Court this morning before he was sent back to the Westchester County jail.

Manuel Zumba, 32, who is charged with second-degree assault, is due back in court Tuesday. His lawyer, George Echevarria of Ossining, said the family did not wish to retain his services anymore and were interested in obtaining a Legal Aid attorney.


When the judge asked Zumba if he wanted the court to appoint an attorney or if he was going to hire one, Zumba said he wanted to talk to his family first.

The county District Attorney's Office asked the court to remand him without bail. He's been held on $250,000 bail and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has placed a detainer on the Ecuadorian native as it investigates his immigration status.

The judge increased the bail to $500,000.

Police said the baby has suffered several seizures in the hospital, where she remains in critical condition with broken bones and other injuries.

Police said Zumba and his wife, Zoila Mora, took the child to Hudson Valley Hospital Center in Cortlandt on Friday night, where she was born Dec. 14. The baby was transported to the Westchester Medical Center on Saturday.

Village police Detective Jose Ferrao said some of the injuries were at least a week old, with the most recent occurring Friday.

The county's Child Protective Services are blocking Zumba and Mora from having any access to their baby, who is being kept in the intensive care unit of the Maria Fareri Children's Hospital. The couple has been married 15 years and have two other children in Ecuador, police said.

Zumba's friends and relatives sat in on yesterday's proceedings. Mora, who declinded to comment, left shortly after the session with a woman in a Mercedes Benz.

This is the trash that Obama and his cronies want us to amnesty into our country and make us pay for with our hard earned money.

So, they left two children in Ecuador but made sure they had an anchor as quickly as possible...too bad he apparently tried to kill the anchor! And God forbid they pay their own attorney when they can get one at American taxpayers' expense. And yet, his wife leaves in a Benz???? I know it wasn't hers, or at least I assume so since she wasn't driving it, but if they're so much in the 'shadows' how do they know people who own these cars? maldef, lulac, aclu???
