This first Fides Dossier on the Question of Immigration in the United States of America, opens with an overall view; an illustration of the socio-economic situation in the country which have encouraged immigration since the first settlements and an analysis of the policies employed over the years to regulate a vast movement of people, will precede the examination of a far more complex situation today, with the country facing enormous migratory challenges of the new millennium, lacking the necessary legislation, and in the grip of serious economic crisis and widespread social malcontent.

With regard to tougher measures taken in recent years to regulate the migratory immigration, an emblematic case is the situation on the US-Mexico border, where the latest strategies of closure culminated in the approval by the US Congress of a proposal to build a 700 mile wall along the border. The United States Catholic Bishops' Conference, together with the whole local Catholic community, has firmly condemned the ineffectiveness and violence of these measures. For many years the Catholic Bishops of America have strenuously fought for migrants and against systems of repression, actively involved in promoting immigration reforms which encourage legality and respect for human rights.

Historical and economic origin of immigration in the United States

“ I have had various ad limina visits from Bishops of Central America and also from South America, and I have seen the breadth of this problem, especially the serious problem of the break-up of families. And this is really dangerous for the social, moral and human fabric of these Countries. However, it is necessary to distinguish between measures to be taken straight away and long-term solutions. The fundamental solution is that there should no longer be any need to emigrate because there are sufficient jobs in the homeland, a self-sufficient social fabric, so that there is no longer any need to emigrate […].And I would also like to speak to the President on this point, because it is above all the United States that must help these countries to develop. […]Then, short-term measures: it is very important to help families in particular. In the light of the conversations I have had with Bishops about the main problems, it appears that families should be protected rather than destroyed. What can be done should be doneâ€

I would like for the Catholic Church to spend their time and money helping the countries these illegal aliens come from. Deploy activists there to demand those governments take care of its citizens.
    Shame them into doing it.

You ever wonder why "hispanics" don't emigrate to other hispanic countries? There are a number of hispanic countries that are wealthy, why don't illegal aliens go there? I'll tell you why..because those countries will NOT subsidize illegal aliens thru welfare and social benefits! We are the ONLY country stupid enough to do it and call it "humanitarian"!

These are not refugees or asylum qualified immigrants, these are greedy, moneygrubbing lawbreakers!

Perhaps the Vatican would like to open its doors to a number of illegals (or "irregulars" as they're called in the article) and see if that changes their minds. They can pay for housing, medical and educational benefits and set aside an area for drug dealing. Then I would consider anything the Vatican has to say about immigration.

The Pope lives in a PALACE surrounded by servants like a Fuedal King paid for by,in part, poor peasants from poor countries so it is no surprise he and his Bishops would champion their cause.

He is clueless as to how IA's effect our country while he is living in luxury walled off from "Reality" we experience every day !

Pull their tax exempt NOW as they have NO business interfering with our countries political decisions and the will of its citizens !

100% agree with all of the above.

The NWO sounds fine and dandy in a fantasy world. Something maybe to strive for, in due time, but it's not solely the Americans or any other civilized and successful countrys responsibility to be forced to take people and try and drag them kicking and screaming out of their 3rd world mentality to a rational civilization, while the lousy countries they flee from stay status quo, with their hands still out for more. Not to mention and no offense to Catholics, who cares what a Bishop thinks.....any more than I care what any representative from a specific relegion states.....even my own. We aren't dealing with people who all have the same moral beliefs or even the desire to practice them if they do know them. Their job is teaching a moral life to people who want to learn it and help where they can, not tell everyone else what to do. Not for glories here on earth but for their everlasting domain? Heck, wasn't our own country founded from people fleeing some Catholic run nations because of their intolerance of other faiths, and treatment of people who didn't bow to their command. Seems they have enough on their plate without telling this government what it should do. They should be in Mexico and where ever else these people are fleeing from and start preaching to those governments about what their responsibility as national leaders are for their own people. Teaching them about tolerance, self responsibility, respect for others, on down the line. I mean how "racially balanced" is Mexico? How tolerant and welcoming are they to immigrants who aren't latino to their country? What rights do they have compared to their own citizens....including "workers rights", and all the rest.......heck their own citizens don't really have many. How "humane" do they treat their prisoners, children, ill people, handicapped, poor, on down the line? Their track record is far from stellar or they wouldn't be running here. Or maybe a sermon or two on respect and gratitude for the countries who take them instead of nothing but hate and seperation and demands might be helpful. They have their own specific job to do without telling America what they should do. We've got the world beat 10-1 with our immigration policies, compassion and help for other countries, freedoms, human rights, childrens rights, pets rights etc. and such, so we've more than done our part.......time for the other countries to do more than hold their hand out or feel justified to run their unwanted here for us to take care of at our demise. Not to mention a growing number who aren't comming here for good Christian charity but for ill intent.

Tens of thousands of Catholics have deserted the chuch in the last decade and they need to replenish their coffers. They lost the battle fighting for gay priests and they are going to lose this battle also because they are dead wrong this time too. When illegal immigration into this country reaches a point where American society becomes disfunctional then it is wrong any way you look at it. It is an outright invasion and anybody or organization that throws their support to it should be considered enemies of the American people.
Americans everywhere are forced to take a back seat to the politically correct open borders mentality and it has to come to a stop. This country belongs to Americans and not the Catholic church. To further their goals they are promoting outright anarchy in contravention of our laws and the US Constitution. Everything good about America comes from that document and they would rather disregard it in favor of enlarging the church's bank account. If there is a God in heaven the way the bible says then he should bring fire and brimstone down upon the Vatican for encouraging the destruction of this great nation.

To be really nasty, perhaps the pedophile priests have run out of new flesh in this country and need to import. Of course they want lots of Catholics in this country, as when the illegals earn good money they give more to the church.
As for calling anyone in this country xenophobic, they should look within and into their history. Even before the crusades those zealots overran every country they could find, and those that would not convert were banished from a descent life, perhaps for worshiping in a different fashion.
Their assumed power to dictate policy and law because it comes from a higher power is their shortfall. Americans don't like to be told what to do, especially if it is against this nation's interests.
