TUCSON, Ariz. - A Mexican man who was previously convicted of sex offenses in Wisconsin has been sentenced to almost six years in prison for illegally re-entering the country.

Federal prosecutors say 45-year-old Refugio Alvarez-Olivan, of Cuernavaca, Morelos, was arrested May 18 by Tucson Station Border Patrol agents.

During processing, a fingerprint identification system showed that Alvarez-Olivan was previously convicted in 1996 in Sheboygan, Wis., for battery to a child and three counts of second degree sexual assault.

Records also showed Alvarez-Olivan was previously deported to Mexico after serving a nine-month prison sentence.

The Border Patrol submitted the case to the U.S. Attorney's Office for prosecution of Alvarez-Olivan for re-entry of a felon.

Authorities say he'll be formally removed from the country following his 70-month incarceration.
