A teen was shot in the neck by someone in a passing SUV as he rode his bike on a central Phoenix street Wednesday morning.

The 13-year-old Hispanic boy was riding in the area of 22nd and Sheridan streets at about 9 a.m. when a maroon Ford Explorer pulled up alongside him, according to a Phoenix police spokeswoman.

There were four Hispanic male suspects around 16 years of age in the vehicle.

The suspects exchanged words with the victim before one of them fired a shot into the victim's neck.

Officers found the vehicle a short time later near 20th Place and Oak Streets.

A 16-year-old Hispanic male was found 10 feet away from the suspect vehicle and was detained.

Police also detained another teenager as an investigative lead in the case because he is an affiliate of the 16-year-old who was detained near the suspect vehicle.

The two detained teenagers are not considered to be suspects at this time, but are part of the investigation.

Officials believe that this incident might be gang related and the Phoenix Police Gang Squad is conducting an investigation.

The victim was taken to a Valley hospital where he underwent surgery.

He is reported to be in serious, but stable condition.
