Bill would ban charities funding illegals

What do you think?

Charities that provide services to illegal immigrants would be denied taxpayer money under a bill proposed by a Manassas delegate.

Del. Jackson H. Miller's bill to prevent government money from funding assistance to illegal aliens passed the Health, Welfare and Institutions committee on Tuesday.

Miller, R-50th - a strong opponent of illegal immigration - received partisan support in the House of Delegates committee.

The 13 Republican members present voted for the measure and eight Democrats voted against it; Republicans hold a majority in the House.

Miller targeted the Woodbridge Workers Committee, which advocates for day laborer and immigrant rights, as one of the groups he does not want to see receive state or local money.

"I would not want state money going to the Woodbridge Workers Committee for any of their activities," Miller said during the committee hearing.

He said he also didn't want to see public money fund a place like Herndon's day labor pickup site.

This is one of many bills Miller has submitted during his freshman year representing the Manassas area, where he said he sees the immigrant community growing quickly.

While he praises legal immigrants as assets to his community, the legislation he's proposing aims to limit illegal alien access to public benefits and employment.
