SAN DIEGO (Map, News) - A pleasure boat authorities suspect was used for smuggling illegal immigrants and contraband has been found on U.S. Navy property.

Lifeguards received a report Sunday of a grounded vessel on naval property just north of Point Loma, said San Diego Lifeguard Service Lt. Andy Lerum.

Based on an initial investigation, "it fits the profile of a boat for smuggling illegal aliens and contraband," Lerum said.

Lerum said the vessel is registered to a resident of Tijuana, Mexico.

Officials believe the boat had been there at least a day.

The matter was being investigated by the U.S. Coast Guard.

    UPDATED: 6:15 am PDT June 18, 2007

SAN DIEGO -- A 19-foot pleasure boat believed to be used for smuggling illegal aliens was found on U.S. Navy property just north of Point Loma, 10News reported.

City lifeguards received a report of a grounded vessel in the Sunset Cliffs area shortly after 12:30 p.m. Sunday, San Diego Lifeguard Service Lt. Andy Lerum told The San Diego Union-Tribune.

Officials believe the boat had been there at least a day, but nobody was on board when lifeguards searched it, the newspaper reported.

Lerum said the vessel is registered to a Tijuana resident. He said that, based on an initial investigation, "it fits the profile of a boat for smuggling illegal aliens and contraband,'' the Union-Tribune reported.

The U.S. Coast Guard was conducting an investigation.
