Clemson City Council is drafting an ordinance to take a bite out of the crime of hiring illegal aliens.

Councilwoman Margaret Thompson proposed a resolution at the council's meeting Monday night, but Mayor Larry Abernathy and other council members felt the issue deserved more serious attention.

"Let's pass something that has the weight of law," Abernathy said. "Let's craft this thing; let's be proud of what we come up with and let's put it out there."

The council tabled the resolution and decided instead to draft an ordinance that could be enforced.

Ideas for the ordinance included making businesses aware through business license procedures and bidding processes that Clemson will not tolerate the hiring of illegal aliens by anyone operating in the city.

The issue was placed on the next council's meeting, July 2. For information call Clemson City Hall at 653-2030.
