A Fort Bliss soldier will serve 24 months in prison for immigrant smuggling, a court document states.
Alejandro Javier Lazos Ortiz was sentenced by U.S. District Judge David Briones to three 24-month prison sentences, which will run concurrently.

Ortiz will also serve three years of supervised release.

The court document containing Ortiz's sentence was signed by Briones on Tuesday.

A jury in March found Ortiz guilty of conspiracy to harbor aliens, harboring illegal aliens, and inducing/encouraging illegal aliens to live in the United States.

Upon his conviction in March, officials with the Office of U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton described Ortiz as a Fort Bliss soldier.

Fort Bliss officials were unable to confirm today if Lazos Ortiz was assigned to the post.
