SAN DIEGO — Rescue crews are continuing to search the sea and hills around Torrey Pines State Beach for illegal immigrants Saturday morning after a small boat capsized in the surf during a smuggling run, authorities said.
One man died at a hospital and a second passenger was reported to be in critical condition, said San Diego police.
A law enforcement helicopter was reportedly tracking the 30-foot panga boat about 4:30 a.m. when the vessel flipped, dumping its passengers into the frigid water, said San Diego Fire Department spokesman Maurice Luque.
More than 100 firefighters, lifeguards and law enforcement officers from numerous agencies raced to the beach to launch a rescue operation. Lifeguard and Coast Guard boats combed the sea for survivors while at least three helicopters shined search lights from above.
Six passengers were taken to hospitals with various injuries, including one who later died.
Nine others were evaluated by paramedics at the scene and handed over to Border Patrol agents.
