Bodies of 3 Illegal Aliens Found on South Texas Road

Bodies of 3 Immigrants Found on South Texas Road

    Last Update: 8:18 am

SAN DIEGO, Texas (AP) - A reserve deputy driving home from work swerved violently off the road and overturned his car after his headlights revealed the battered bodies of three men on a dark South Texas road.

The incident happened about 1 a.m. Tuesday as Duval County reserve deputy Alonzo Zamora was driving along Farm-to-Market Road 1329. Sheriff's Sgt. David Canales says Zamora suffered only bumps and bruises in the crash.

Canales says the men were a 30-year-old from El Salvador, a 23-year-old from the Dominican Republic and a 23-year-old from Mexico. Each suffered head injuries, and the Salvadoran also had a broken forearm.

Circumstances that led to their deaths are unclear, but Canales tells the Alice Echo-News the Texas Rangers have begun a homicide investigation.

Three immigrants found dead in Duval County

Authorities in Duval County are investigating three homicides that they say may have been the result of a hit and run accident.

A reserve sheriff's deputy wrecked his car at about 2 a.m. Tuesday after swerving to avoid the bodies of three suspected illegal immigrants lying on FM 1329, said Duval County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Jose Martinez III. The victims were men from Mexico, El Salvador and the Dominican Republic, Martinez said. Their ages range from 23 to 30, he said.

The case is being investigated with the Texas Rangers, Border Patrol and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Martinez said. Deputies don't have any leads, he said, but they did find seven more immigrants who said they had traveled with the dead men.

The immigrants told authorities that the coyote, or human smuggler, leading their group through the brush took two men to collect water and food from other smugglers in a vehicle on the road, Martinez said.

“They heard noises, heard individuals getting hit and they heard moaning and groaning and they were actually scaredâ€

Deputy: Smuggler among 3 found dead on road

    The Associated Press
    June 29, 2011, 7:59PM

SAN DIEGO, Texas — Authorities say three suspected illegal immigrants found dead on a dark South Texas road included a man suspected of being their smuggler.

The bodies were found about 1 a.m. Tuesday on Farm-to-Market Road 1329.

Duval County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Jose Martinez tells the San Antonio Express-News that deputies found seven other immigrants in the brush nearby. The seven reported that their smuggler, or coyote, had taken two other members of their party to the road for an expected rendezvous with food and water. Instead, the seven heard the sounds of the three being hit and left moaning on the road until they died.

Martinez says the 30-year-old man from El Salvador, the 23-year-old man from the Dominican Republic and the 23-year-old man from Mexico each suffered head and internal injuries.
