Benjamin Franklin is credited with saying, when the Constitutional Convention had finished its work and someone asked what type of government had been chosen, "A republic, if you can keep it." Now WND readers have named as their top choice Colorado Congressman Tom Tancredo's recipe for repairing the damage that the United States has suffered, outlined in his book "In Mortal Danger: The Battle for America's Border and Security," from Shop.WND.com.

English historian Edward Gibbon, in "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire," wrote that the once-great empire fell because it rotted from within, succumbing to barbarian invasions because of a loss of civic virtue, its citizens soft and lazy, hiring mercenaries to defend them because they were unwilling to do it themselves.

Tancredo's book outlines how he believes the United States if following a similar course. But it also includes what the remedies are, and how they should be implemented before the United States becomes nothing more than a subject of "once-great empires" in a history book.

"Tom Tancredo is a rare breed in Washington who puts principle above ego and country above party. 'In Mortal Danger' is a clarion call for all good citizens to come to the aid of this great nation," said Michelle Malkin, author of the best-selling "Invasion," and a WND columnist.

Tancredo takes on the hard questions: how economic and military successes of the past have transformed a nation founded on Judeo-Christian principles of right and wrong into an overindulgent, self-deprecating, immoral cesspool of depravity.

Tancredo also recently launched an effort to explore a bid for the presidency in 2008.

"My purpose," said Tancredo on the "Team Tancredo 2008" website, "is to obtain your support as I embark upon a path that may lead to the Republican nomination for the Presidency of the United States."

He added: "The decision to pursue this arduous and undeniably uphill battle is because I, like you, have a duty to do everything I can to keep faith with those who risked their 'lives, fortunes and sacred honor' to create this wonderful place we call America."

Does Tancredo actually have a chance of winning the presidency?

"Illegals coming into America are sure to be front and center in the next presidential election here," Neil Cavuto said on a June broadcast of the popular Fox News show, "Your World with Neil Cavuto," "and Republican Congressman Tom Tancredo certainly knows it. He owns this issue. And straw polls show that, if he were to run for president, he just might well be president."

Tancredo concludes that without strong, moral leadership, a renewed sense of purpose and a rededication to family and community, the catastrophes of past civilizations may be repeated in the United States.

In second place for WND readers was the message from David Kupelian's "Marketing of Evil.

Malkin suggests it's a book that every parent in America needs to read.

"David Kupelian skillfully exposes the secular left's rotten apple peddlers in devastating detail. … Kupelian shines a light on them all. Now watch the cockroaches run for cover," she said.

The book "brings into sharp focus what many have sensed and suspected for a long time: The effort to change America's mind on issues like abortion, homosexuality, church-state separation, and more, is a well-thought-out strategic campaign that uses the methods of Madison Avenue to market rank lies."

That's according to D. James Kennedy, founder of Coral Ridge Ministries, who also noted that "the good news is that the truth will eventually win out, and Kupelian's important and groundbreaking book makes enormous progress toward that end."

In third place was WND's Valentine's Day bumper sticker. The "I Love America" bumper sticker comes at a time when America is embroiled in more division and angst than at any time in the last 40 years.

The bumper sticker, magnetic and removable, is perfect for cars, refrigerators, file cabinets and other items, and allows the owner to make a loving patriotic station about this nation.
