Body Found Buried in a Shallow Grave
Investigators spent the weekend investigating a murder in Brunswick County. On Friday, a man working on a tobacco farm found the body of Mauricio Guerro buried in a shallow grave off of Old King Road. That's in the Ash community. The person charged with the murder, Guerro's own roommate.
On Friday afternoon a farm hand made a grisly discovery in this tobacco field. He found the body of Mauricio Guerro buried in a shallow grave. According to Brunswick County deputies, Guerro's roommate, Avelino Pena, stabbed him to death on Monday, May 23rd.
"The medical examiner confirmed through an autopsy, the victim had four stab wounds to his neck." said Assistant District Attorney, Lee Bollinger.
In Pena's first court appearance a judge denied bond. Right now, authorities are not releasing a motive for the murder.
"I believe Mr. Pena has given a statement through an interpreters, I really don't know what the motivation was at this point."
Authorities say Pena came to the United States from Mexico three years ago and was living here illegally. Right now, authorities are still looking for witnesses to interview. Assistant D.A Bollinger tells NewsChannel 3, they plan to hold a probable cause hearing within the next two weeks.
