Bomb Detonated on US-Mexico Border Bridge

Bomb Detonated on US-Mexico Border Bridge

NUEVO LAREDO, MEXICO -- A bomb found on the Puerta a las Americas, one of the four international bridges linking this Mexican city to Laredo, Texas, was detonated by U.S. explosives experts using a robot, Mexican officials said.

A caller told the emergency operations center in Nuevo Laredo, which is in Tamaulipas state, that six bombs had been planted on the bridge on Saturday, Nuevo Laredo emergency management chief Juan Ernesto Rivera told Efe.

After police on both sides of the border were notified and the bridge was closed, U.S. explosives experts searched the structure and found only one bomb, which was destroyed in a controlled detonation.

The bridge reopened a few minutes later to pedestrians and vehicles.

Bomb threats have been received for months, but this was the first time that an actual bomb was found in the area.

U.S. explosives experts are analyzing the bomb.

This is huge. Why is there no coverage of this on the news? Could this be terrorists trying to harm Americans, or the drug cartels carrying out some sort of turf war? Lawmakers need to finish the damn fence and stop all immigration to and from Mexico. Our national security is at risk.

'Hoax device' closes U.S.-Mexico border bridge in Laredo

    Associated Press

    Jan. 25, 2009, 4:57PM

LAREDO — A U.S.-Mexico border bridge was shut down for about two hours after authorities responded to a report of a suspicious package and later discovered it was a "hoax device."

Authorities said a transient spotted the package near a trash bin under the bridge on Saturday morning and notified Border Patrol agents.

The device could have been planted to make people believe it was a bomb, Franceska Perot, spokeswoman for Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, told The Associated Press.

"Or it could be that it was some kind of training device," Perot said. "It could have been some law-enforcement entity used it as a training device and threw it away. We have to treat it as a threat and investigate it to its fullest."

Laredo police used a robot to examine the package. The bomb-defusing robot shot the package with a high-powered water cannon, blowing it to pieces and exposing the device inside, said police spokesman Jose E. Baeza.

    It did not detonate.

"When we got up close, we realized it was a hoax device," Perot told The Laredo Morning Times for its Sunday online editions.

"In other words, it did not contain explosives. It was basically road flares."

ATF will conduct an investigation to find who is responsible.

It was a test to see how they would respond to the event on the 26th. Once they know how all the units involved react, is where they will set the secondary devices.
