Border agent shoots, kills man in Douglas

By Marisa Gerber Arizona Daily Star Arizona Daily Star | Posted: Monday, March 21, 2011 8:37 pm

A Border Patrol agent shot and killed a 19-year-old man east of the Douglas port of entry Monday afternoon, officials said.

The incident began with Douglas police pursuing an alleged drug smuggler around 12:30 p.m., said FBI spokesman Manuel Johnson.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as Carlos La Madrid of Douglas, drove toward the border, says Carol Capas, a spokeswoman for the Cochise County Sheriff’s Department.

When the vehicle arrived near the border wall east of the port of entry, a Border Patrol agent was in the area, Capas says.

Details are sketchy, but at some point there were rocks thrown at the agent, Capas said.

The agent then fired at La Madrid, striking him three times. Capas didn’t know who threw the rocks or if La Madrid was in his vehicle or on foot at the time of the shooting.

“We have evidence that rocks were thrown, but it’s unclear who threw them,â€

Border Patrol Agent Shoots Man 3 Times

Updated: Monday, 21 Mar 2011, 8:13 PM MDT
    Published : Monday, 21 Mar 2011, 8:00 PM MDT

DOUGLAS, Ariz. (AP) — A Border Patrol agent on Monday shot a man three times as the man fled police in southeastern Arizona, authorities said.

Several agencies involved in the shooting or investigation released few details, including whether the agent was put on leave or the condition of the man who was shot.

Douglas police spotted a suspicious vehicle that quickly sped away from them toward the Mexican border, Cochise County sheriff's spokeswoman Carol Capas said in a statement issued late Monday. Border Patrol agents were in the area when the vehicle made it to the border and "there were rocks thrown" at the agent, she said.

The agent then shot the 19-year-old driver three times, Capas said. The man was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, but an update was unavailable. It's unclear whether the man who was shot threw rocks at the agent.

Border Patrol spokesman Mario Escalante confirmed that an agent shot a man Monday, but he declined to release further details, including whether the agent was on leave. He referred all other questions to the FBI, which is investigating the shooting.

FBI spokesman Manuel Johnson said the man who was shot may have been loading marijuana into a vehicle when Douglas police spotted him.

He said the man who was shot may have been trying to get across the border back into Mexico using a ladder propped up on a border barrier, but Johnson had no details confirmed.

He declined to answer any further questions, citing the ongoing investigation.

Capas and Douglas police did not return calls for comment.

DOUGLAS, Ariz. (KGUN9-TV) - The Cochise County Sheriff's Department has confirmed there has been a shooting involving Border Patrol agents along the border in Douglas.

Carol Capas, a spokesperson with the Cochise County Sheriff tells KGUN9 they received a call around 12:34 p.m. indicating there had been an agent involved shooting near the international border.

Border Patrol attempted to stop the subject vehicle, but it failed to stop. The vehicle began heading south towards the border fence, east of the Douglas Port of Entry. When the vehicle finally came to stop, Border Patrol agents spotted a ladder on the southside of fence indicating there may have been an attempt to cross north of border fence, says Capas.

The driver and passenger then got out of vehicle and started throwing rocks at Border Patrol. Agents then fired striking the 19-year-old driver of vehicle three times. The passenger was not injured. The driver was transported to Southeast Medical Center in Douglas and then transported by ground to a Tucson hospital.

Both the Cochise County Sheriff and the FBI responded to the scene of the shooting.

Border Patrol Kills Man in Douglas, Arizona

    Written by R. Cort Kirkwood

A U.S. Border Patrol Agent shot and killed a 19-year-old man in Douglas, Ariz., on Monday.

According to the Associated Press, Douglas police were chasing a car that was racing for the Mexican Border. There, the vehicle and its occupants ran into the Border patrol.

    Reported AP:

Douglas police spotted a suspicious vehicle that quickly sped away from them toward the Mexican border, Cochise County sheriff's spokeswoman Carol Capas said in a statement issued late Monday. Border Patrol agents were in the area when the vehicle made it to the border and "there were rocks thrown" at the agent, she said.

The dead man is Carlos La Madrid. AP did not reveal whether La Madrid was an illegal alien.

La Madrid, an FBI spokesman said, could have been loading marijuana into a vehicle when the cops spotted him, and may also have been trying to flee back across to Mexico using a ladder at the border fence.

Investigators are releasing few details because the investigation is ongoing.

    Under Attack

The Border Patrol has been under seige for years. Two weeks ago, a pair of Mexicans standing atop the border fence at Calexico, Calif., pelted agents with rocks while they were trying to arrest three illegals.

And sometimes, the border is more violent. In Sept. 2010, Mexican drug traffickers opened fire on border agents near San Antonio, Texas, while they chasing truck along the Rio Grande River.

In that case, one group of agents was conducting a river-borne drug bust when another group of agents entered the area chasing the truck. Mexicans began firing across the border, and the agents returned fire.

    Another Fatality

Monday's shooting isn't the first time an agent has defended himself with lethal force while under attack by rock-throwing Mexicans. In June, 2010, an agent killed a 15-year-boy under similar circumstances. Border jumpers were tossing rocks at agents in downtown El Paso.

El Paso is across the border from Ciudad Juarez, one of the most dangerous cities in the world, where more than 3,000 were killed in 2010 alone. Between January 2008 and July 2010 the drug wars claimed 6,000 lives.

On February 10-11, 2011, 18 were killed in the narcocity during 24-hours of gunfighting that included a siege on a bar that left six waitresses dead.

Before you post about things you obviously know nothing about, check your facts. BORTAC Agent Brian Terry was well-armed, carrying both an M4 rifle capable of fully automatic fire and the service sidearm, an HK P2000. Further, he was extremely well-trained, even more so than the Agent who was forced to shoot the doper in Douglas inasmuch as Terry was a BORTAC operator.

The Agent who shot the doper, someone I know personally and work with on a regular basis, is one of the nicest, most mild-mannered individuals one could have the honor of meeting and knowing. He is someone whom many of us would say would put himself at greater risk to avoid the use of lethal force than many others would. So, your post accomplished nothing more than showing yet again how a lack of information or a grasp of the facts will not prevent people from disseminating their misinformation.

Until you have been in the position of both Terry and the Agent who shot the doper, until you've been on the line fighting as we do day in and day out against the very thing you're harping about on this site, you don't have the background or qualifications to besmirch or otherwise denigrate the memory of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry or any other American hero who has put his or her life on the line for the greater cause. At least Terry was out there fighting the good fight.

Using a decidedly unfortunate event to make a misguided, misinformed point about a tragedy is indicative of a categorical lack of class. If I were you, I'd be ashamed of myself and would endeavor to keep my mouth shut. Sadly, it is always people like Brian that are getting killed, while the people who are so willing to use their deaths as a step up onto their soapboxes continue to judge from their armchairs.

And, for what it's worth, "diligence" is actually spelled with an "e" instead of an "a."

Agent Terry was out in the dark protecting the sheep against the wolves, and was tragically killed while displaying incredible honor and courage.

Waiter was sitting on his butt at home watching the boob-tube, eating Cheetos, and posting inane points of view on ALIPAC. Which one is still alive?
