Border agents catch Texas fugitive in New Mexico
Oct. 6, 2008, 4:46PM
LORDSBURG, N.M. — A man wanted in connection with a 2001 capital murder case in Texas has been arrested near the New Mexico-Arizona border.
Border Patrol agents picked up Benito Gonzalez-Serrano of Mexico as he and others were walking along a highway near the border about 20 miles south of Rodeo, N.M., on Friday. Gonzalez is wanted by authorities in Waxahachie, Texas.
Agents said Gonzalez and the others were taken to Lordsburg for processing and that’s when it was learned a warrant had been issued for his arrest in July 2001. The warrant was issued under a different name but the fingerprint verification system identified Gonzalez as the person wanted.
The Ellis County Sheriff’s Office in Waxahachie is seeking Gonzalez’s extradition to Texas.
