Montana National Guard to the border

July 1, 2006, 01:58 PM EDT

Governor Schweitzer has signed a letter promising support from the Montana National Guard in patrolling the Mexican border.
Montana has become one of ten states to pledge it's soldiers to support the President Bush's border plan. The idea is to use the troops to help crack down on illegal immigration.
Brigadier General Stan Putnam, assistant adjutant general of the Montana Guard, says between 30 to 50 soldiers could be tapped to support the border mission.
Putnam says the Montana Guard's only concern is giving up it's Blackhawk helicopters during the summer fire season.
The state would like to keep its' fleet of seven Blackhawk helicopters close to home this summer.
