Get tough with negligent employers, too

Get tough with negligent employers, too

When federal agents raided the Agriprocessors plant in Postville earlier this year, praise flooded in. The essence of that reaction? It’s about time.

The May 12 immigration raid at the nation’s largest kosher meatpacking plant resulted in the arrest of 389 workers. Most of the workers were charged with using false identities to obtain jobs and most were here illegally.

We will be clear about this: We have laws in this country for a reason. Anyone found violating those laws should be punished accordingly. Illegal immigrants found to be using false identities should be held accountable and then tossed out of this country. No exceptions. No excuses. No apologies.

Several months later, however, there is something peculiar happening in Postville. Agriprocessors is still up and running, producing beef and chicken. They’ve added a new batch of Somali immigrants to their workforce and, according to reports published Wednesday, are recruiting $10-per-hour workers from the Pacific Island of Palau.

There is no doubt the plant and its ownership and management have felt some pain. The raid, the largest at one site in U.S. history, wiped out roughly half of the plant’s workforce. But has it been enough?

    Consider this:

    - Two supervisors were arrested and charged with knowingly hiring illegal workers.

    - Federal agents say they found evidence that a human resources employee at the plant helped distribute false immigration documents to workers.

    - The plant may face fines of up to $1 million after the state’s labor commission asked Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller to consider charging the plant for an eye-popping number of criminal violations related to child labor.

    - On Friday, state labor officials cited the plant with 31 new and repeat safety violations and proposed fining the Postville plant $101,000 for 21 serious violations and six repeat offenses.

Company spokespeople have maintained that the plant did not knowingly hire illegal workers; they claim they were duped. They also say the company did not aid any workers seeking to obtain immigration documents. Finally, they have urged the public to keep an open mind toward the alleged child labor violations, saying once again this was not company practice.

Start putting all employers in jail for a year with fines.

If someone doesn't have a United States shot record, driver's license, Social Security card, a high school dipolma, work history or speak English fluent; use common senses call ICE.

    Call ICE.

The small employers must be held accountable too; the many landscaping companies, building subcontractors, etc.

    hattiecat:

I totally agree and one way to do this is require everyone to visit the state unemployment office and get E-Verified.

And a employer must do matching of names, social security, driver's license, birth certificate, and etc. against the unemployment E-Verify, too.

I'd go even tougher to REALLY put a scare into them! The closing of their company IF they hire illegals and have not gone thru the E-Verification System!!! That might change their little corrupt minds ...

Save America and Hire only Americans!

Employers need to undertand the staggering effect of hiring even one illegal....

I think that employers and their sympathizers need to understand that when they hire an illegal it is not a one dimensional situation. The employer is thinking about their profit margin but the ultimate cost of that one illegal is staggering. 1. If an illegal is hired, employers run the strong risk of being infected with a contagious disease and/or exposing others to the disease entity. Ultimately taxes will go up and the employer who is/was trying to save a buck now has to shell our more bucks to go toward illegals without health insurance. And too, other employee’s health may be at stake. And too, the employer may risk their own health and productivity by contracting the disease. 2. Also, by hiring an illegal, employers are taking the job away from an American. Taxes go up to pay for welfare and unemployment for American workers not hired and/or laid off by employers trying to save money. And taxes also are raised to pay for illegals and their extended families to cover welfare, education, benefits, and other costs of maintaining an infrastructural system to accommodate the ever growing illegals population.
And too, Americans spend money in America. Illegals send their money to Mexico and/or their home country. Mr. and/or Ms. Employer or Mr. /Ms. CEO may have to close the doors to their businesses because Americans can’t afford the service/product.
    3. Illegals bring in other illegals....in area's of high illegals demographics taxes go up and so does the crime rate. Services and the quality of life for Americans goes way down. And that lowered quality of life has a domino effect. Again the employer is effected, by having to pay more in taxes, and/or by having their communities destroyed. And/or increasing the likelihood that their friends and/or family members may very well be a victim of illegal crime. 4. As more illegals come in, our hospitals and schools get over crowded and the quality of care and attention dramatically declines. Perhaps the employers child had to be rushed to the hospital emergency room only to be turned away because the waiting room was filled with illegals with head aches, a cold or even a hang nail….meanwhile the employers child suffered or worse. 5. The employer wants their kid to have a higher quality of life but by hiring an illegal that brings in more illegals, schools are easily filled up with the “anchor babies’ and Spanish tutors are hired and then their kids education gets put on hold to accommodate the illegals off spring. The dumbing down of America because of the illegals children is going to put our entire country at risk because we won’t be able to compete in global markets. 6. Every time an illegal is hired more and more of our country is being dismantled. Hiring illegals opens up our country to the very real threat of terrorist attacks. If employers don’t hire them they won’t come and destroy our country.
    7. If an employer had a beloved child and that child was brutally murdered ( god forbid) by the brother of the illegal the employer hired to work under the table….this would drive the point home. And yet, even if the employer’s child is not at risk….the employer is bringing this real threat to someone else’s child. If one American citizen is murdered by an illegal…it is one to many.
    8. And too, illegals are potential terrorist, rapists, drug dealers and criminals. Employers, you are personally responsible for any heinous crimes committed by an illegal if you hire him/her…..
    9. Hiring illegals is an act of treason….the decision has to be made…love of Country or love of money employers? If employers choose money over country….they will live to regret their decision as the illegals march through our streets and take over our homes and communites….

Hiring one Illegal contributes to the destruction of our country and our entire way of life!
